“Mourning Dove”

By Sam Behrend

Took a turn down 13th street thinking it would be my lucky day

Drove through the magnolias and across the gilded gate

Opened up my guarded heart and threw away the key

Til like a white mourning dove, you left and flew away

Oh, how did I fall in love

Oh, look where I ended up

I’m in love with a bird who’s left her cage

Left for a man who wants to clip her wings

Follow the daisies that grow along the gate

Till I see my morning dove flying away

Did you know by winter you would grow tattered wings

Given by a man who’d rather climb rubber trees

He took your hazel eyes and smiling freckled face

Now my heart has been stolen away

Now my heart has been stolen away

Oh, why did I fall in love

Oh, was it ever enough

I’m in love with a bird who’s left her cage

Left for a man who wants to clip her wings

Follow the daisies that grow along the gate

Till I see my morning dove flying away

Lost half my soul that was never really me

Flew away into a sky of poisoned candy dreams

Opened up my guarded heart and threw away the key

Now I’m not mourning the dove that flew away

Now I’m not mourning the dove that flew away
