HOUSE CHALLENGE STATS

WEEK 1 CHALLENGE:

“Tic-Tac-T’Otis”

FORMAT

  • Five groups of kids (evenly split)

  • One different house representative in each group

  • One game host

HOUSE ROUND

There will be a giant tic-tac-toe board on the grass in the amphitheater. There will be giant x’s and o’s. There will be 5 groups total, each having a different house representative. Round one will be called the “House Round,” where only house reps play against each other. Whoever wins the tic-tac-toe will have to answer one modern music or theory style trivia question—they will be timed. If they answer incorrectly or after the buzzer, their house will be eliminated from a House Cup nomination. Each house representative will compete against the other houses until only one house stands. If no one gets an answer correct, the game will be reset. Whoever wins the challenge will win 1 House Cup Nomination.

GROUP COMPETITION

Next, the groups will compete. Each group will select the same amount of kids to play a round together. They will each collaborate to place an x or o on the board. Once they win tic-tac-toe, they will also have to answer a trivia question. However, they may consult their entire group in order to up their chances of getting it right. Each group will get three strikes (incorrect answers) before they are eliminated from the game. However, the groups will compete in rounds to keep things moving. The winning group will receive small prizes and first dibs on [TBA] for the week.

WEEK 2 CHALLENGE:

“Riddle-Redding Scavenger Hunt”

FORMAT

  • Five groups of kids (evenly split)

  • One different house representative in each group

  • One game host

GAMEPLAY

There will be various Otis Redding mini vinyl cutouts spread throughout the building and amphitheater (think Easter egg hunt style). Each will have a riddle on the back. All groups will spread out and try to find as many riddles as they can. Once all riddles have been collected, everyone will meet in the amphitheater. Each group will collaborate in answering all of their riddles before the timer runs out (they must write the answers on the card).

Once all riddles have been submitted, the host will read the riddles and answers out loud and mark points on the whiteboard. Any incorrect riddles will be placed in the up-for-grabs pile. Once all riddles have been read, any incorrect riddles will be revisited and each team must hit the buzzer first to answer. This will give teams with less riddles a chance to win. The winning group will receive small prizes and first dibs on [TBA] for the week.

HOUSE ROUND

After the group competition, the house representatives will take the stage and compete one-on-one using a buzzer to answer a difficult riddle. If a riddle is answered incorrectly, that house will be eliminated from the game. Whoever is left standing will win 1 House Cup Nomination.

WEEK 3 CHALLENGE:

“House Family Feud”

FORMAT

  • Five representatives from each house

  • Once coach from each house for the “ask a coach” lifeline

  • Two house teams will compete at a time

  • One game host

GAMEPLAY

Teams will guess top survey answers regarding music—such as instruments, Disney songs, or popular artists—to earn points. The game features face-offs, strikes for wrong answers, and a final "Fast Money" round, using a host, a buzzer, and visual aids to create an engaging, high-energy musical game night.

  • The Face-Off: One player from each team approaches the host. The host asks a music-themed question (e.g., "Name a Disney movie with a great soundtrack"). The first to buzz in gets to answer.

  • Playing or Passing: If the first player gets the top answer, they choose to "Play" or "Pass" the round. If not, the second player can guess for control.

  • Guessing the Board: The team in control tries to guess all remaining answers on the board. Team members can help each other, but must follow turn order.

  • Strikes and Steals: Wrong answers result in a strike. After three strikes, the opposing team gets one chance to "steal" all the points for that round by guessing one remaining answer.

  • Winning: The team with the highest total points after all rounds wins.

Sample Musical Feud Questions:

  • Name a musical instrument kids learn in school.

  • Name a popular movie character who sings a lot.

  • Name something you do with headphones on.

  • Name a Disney princess with a signature song.

  • Name a place where people sing loudly.

Tips for Success:

  • Use Visuals: Use a PowerPoint template or an online maker like Triviamaker to display the game board.

  • Use Fun Sound Effects: Use a "ding" for right answers and a "buzz" for wrong ones.

  • Customize Questions: Focus on music they know—pop hits, movie soundtracks, and cartoon songs.

The winning team of the game will receive 1 House Cup Nomination.

HONOR CHALLENGE:

“Mr. Pitiful”

FORMAT

  • Two coaches from every house

  • House coaches will be scrambled and set into pairs

  • No kids

GAMEPLAY

There will be a jar for each house in the board room. Two coaches from different houses will pair together to be dual judges for an opposing house. No coaches are permitted to judge their own house. This gameplay will be kept secret from the campers and will only be hinted at to encourage good behavior. This is really a coach game. Campers will be given 1 Pitiful Point for each negative behavior (drama, vanity, sassing a coach, etc.) and 1 Satisfaction Point for a positive behavior (encouraging a fellow student, being kind, being timely, working hard, etc.).

Coaches may nominate a student from their own house and present it to the other coaches BRIEFLY during a meeting or gathering if they feel that it is deserving of a point, and if two other house coaches agree, a point may be put in the jar. However, coaches are typically NOT permitted to judge their own house due to bias. Coaches should be observant throughout the day of the campers in the house they are assigned to judge and deliberate with their Pitiful Partner periodically. They will write the reasoning for the point on the card before dropping it into the jar.

Only 1 point may be assigned to a camper PER ACTION, so if a camper displays bad behavior, they can’t receive a million points from all the coaches—it is the same for good actions. Also, the Center Director will ultimately have veto power over points that have been assigned so that points are being given out willy-nilly.

END GOAL

At the end of camp, the Honor Challenge will be used either as a tie breaker or as a way to further score the House Cup Winner, if needed. Students who displayed outstanding behavior in the Honor Challenge will be recognized at the Finale Performance or in public in front of the other campers.
